Buffalo's Howard Washington, the second-team All-Western New York selection as a sophomore who will be transferring to Florida this fall, is currently playing for Team Canada in the FIBA U17 World Championship in Dubai.

On Thursday, Canada fell out of medal contention after a 71-64 loss to Serbia. Washington, a 6-foot-2 point guard, started and had eight points, three rebounds and two assists. Canada will play China in the classification round on Aug. 15.

Washington's mother is Canadian, so he has dual citizenship. He is the only player on the Canadian roster whose hometown is outside Canada.

The team played three preliminary games in France before traveling to Dubai. He has averaged 11.6 points in five games in the FIBA Tournament (player profile page).

Washington, also the co-Player of the Year in the Monsignor Martin Association last year, is transferring from Canisius to Montverde Academy -- one of the very top high school programs in the country -- in Florida this fall.
